Milk Tarts/Queijadas de Leite – Decor and Dine

Milk Tarts/Queijadas de Leite

Maria, from Azorean Green Bean posted her recipe for Milk Tarts on her Facebook page a few days ago and they looked delicious so I decided to give them a try.
The first batch out of the oven was a failure…

After 30 minutes they seemed under-cooked so I left them in longer and the outside was over cooked. The fact that I tried to save time by placing two muffin tins together in the oven might have had something to do with why it went wrong…

This recipe makes 36 tarts so the third batch came out great. Lesson learned…don’t rush.

Milk Tarts/Queijadas de Leite

Yield: 36

  • 4 eggs
  • 3 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup of butter (melted)
  • Confectioners sugar, for dusting

  1. Preheat oven at 350 degrees F.
  2. Grease muffin tins very well with butter (tarts tend to caramelize and stick).
  3. Mix all the ingredients together. I mixed the eggs with the sugar then added the melted butter, milk and flour until it was well blended.
  4. Fill muffin tins about 3/4 of the way.
  5. Place in the oven for 25-30 minutes or until tops are golden, the outside will be crispier.

I always use my stand  mixer…my favourite small appliance.

The edges will be crispy and the center moist…to me they almost have the same texture as the Portuguese custard tarts without all the work.

I sprinkles some with powder sugar and others with a cinnamon and sugar mix
Trust me when I tell you that they are delicious, my husband ate 6 after dinner.
